Please protect the farmers - PRP

The Praja Rajyam has demanded that the State government initiate prompt action to protect farming community which is facing problems despite a bumper rabi crop.
The PR alleged that while millers and the government agencies were refusing to purchase paddy by paying minimum support price to farmers, the government seemed to be in no hurry despite the mounting pressure on farmers. Even as the situation called for immediate and expeditious remedial action, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy went on a holiday with his family.
A delegation of senior PR leaders led by party’s general secretary Allu Arvind and Political Affairs Committee member P. Upendra called on Governor N.D. Tiwari and submitted a memorandum to him urging him to direct the State to take speedy action on the issue. The Governor, who interacted with the delegation, spoke to senior officials of the Food Corporation of India to get a first hand information about the situation.
Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Upendra expressed concern that millers were not procuring the farmers’ produce on the pretext of absence of storage space while six lakh tonnes of wheat of other States was lying in the godowns. In addition, the warehousing agencies allowed commercial crops like tobacco to be stored in the available space.
